Rental scam signs: when to slow down before paying

Recognize concrete rental scam warning signs: payment before viewing, wire or gift-card demands, mismatched contact details and pressure.

A low price alone is not proof

A below-market price can be a concession, a small unit or an old listing. Treat it as a reason to verify, not as proof of a scam. The strongest signal is a request that removes normal safeguards.

Examples include payment before you can verify the unit, wire transfer, cryptocurrency or gift-card payment requests, refusal to allow any viewing, or contact details that do not match the owner or management company.

Verify before documents or money

Open the original listing source. Compare the address, unit, representative and management contact with an official property or brokerage site when one exists. Search the address and photos independently; identical photos used for multiple unrelated homes deserve a closer look.

Never email identification, bank statements or a deposit because a stranger says another applicant is waiting. A real deadline does not make an unverified request safe.

What RentMilo warns about

RentMilo can show a “Verify before paying” notice only when a returned public source contains a concrete warning sign. It cannot determine whether every listing or person is legitimate, so verify the home and the party asking for money yourself.
